2011年、東日本大震災の被災地域へ義援金を送る目的で、奈良県山添村にある障がい者支援施設"大和高原 太陽の家"のメンバー12名によって鳴らされたハンドクワイアチャイムが自主制作として”WANOWA”が録音された。
施設職員であり企画者の友人からの依頼を受けて、2023年、EXPEがこの録音物”WANOWA”に対して後から楽器を重ね挿れていく手法(マルチトラックレコーディングのオーバーダビング)で本作品”FORESIGHT”は制作された。
そのため原作”WANOWA”の音は編集せずそのまま使用している。
おそらく原曲の録音データのサンプリングレートは44.1k /16bitで、収録に使用した録音機器もコンシューマー(一般向け)モデルと思われる。
この録音データを後からアップサンプリング等処理をしても、EXPEによって重ねられた録音データ(96k/32bit float)が比較的鮮明な印象となり、相対的に”WANOWA”の音は少し霞んで滲んだように奥まってしまう。
この問題の処置としてハンドチャイムの音を擬似的にサラウンド効果を与え、周りを取り囲んで漂うような空間処理を施した。
そのため”WANOWA”の音は幻影のように淡く、幽玄の彼方から柔らかな光が降り注いでくるようなアンビエンス効果を得ている。
この夢見心地さによって、一見すると(一聴すると)主体だったはずの”WANOWA”のサウンドはどんどん潜在的に沈み込んで脇役へと移って行きそうになり、逆に鮮やかさのあるEXPEのサウンドが主役となって表出してきそうになってくる。
そうなると、EXPEワールドへもっと突入したくなり、カラフルで繊細で様々なヴァリエーションのギター音を散りばめたくもなる。
が同時に、”WANOWA”の淡い光を留めながらも、並行させるバランス加減も自ずと要求された。
あたかもそれは陰陽太極図や、黄金比のファイφを想起させるような、絶妙と精密さを持った絶対的な法則があるように思えたのだ。
非常に興味深いことに、EXPEがオーバーダビング録音をしていると、ヘッドホンの中にいる”WANOWA”がハンドチャイムによってEXPEの演奏に呼応してくるような錯覚に陥った。
それに対してEXPEがハーモニーを繋げて紡いでいくことで、その先の未知だった曲が流れはじめ、有機的な展開として立ち現れてくるのだ。
このシンクロニシティ現象を常に着目しながら、超自然的に生まれ出来たのが本作品”FORESIGHT”です。
実際にはEXPEによって制作されたアルバムではあるけれど、主役はあくまでも”WANOWA”です。
是非とも、空間に散りばめられながら消えゆくハンドチャイムの音たちが、曲を主導しているという視点を持ったままで、目前に浮き出てくるさまざまな幾何学模様の立体的なレイヤー構造にも意識を向けながら聴いていただけると、色々な角度から再発見が生まれる音響曼陀羅になっている事をお解りいただけるかと思います。
出来るだけ解像度の高いサウンドシステムやヘッドフォンで体験してみて下さい。
In 2011, “WANOWA” was recorded as a self-produced hand choir chime played by 12 members of “Yamato Kogen Taiyo no Ie”, a support facility for people with disabilities in Yamazoe-mura, Nara Prefecture, for the purpose of sending donations to the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
In 2023, at the request of a friend who works at the facility and who is also the producer of the project, EXPE recorded “WANOWA” by adding instruments to the recording (overdubbing of a multi-track recording) and produced this work FORESIGHT” was produced by overdubbing the multi-track recording.
Therefore, the sound of the original “WANOWA” was used without editing.
The sampling rate of the original recording data was probably 44.1k/16bit, and the recording equipment used for the recording was probably a consumer model.
Even if up-sampling or other processing is performed on this recorded data later, the recorded data (96k/32bit float) layered by EXPE gives a relatively clearer impression, and the sound of “WANOWA” becomes a little hazy and blurred. The “WANOWA” sound is a little hazy, blurred, and deep.
To remedy this problem, a pseudo-surround effect was applied to the sound of the hand chime, and spatial processing was applied to make it sound as if it were drifting around the surroundings.
As a result, the sound of “WANOWA” is faint like a phantom, and the ambience effect is as if a soft light is pouring down from the ethereal beyond.
This dreaminess makes the sound of “WANOWA,” which at first glance (at first hearing) should have been the main subject of the piece, seem to sink deeper and deeper into a supporting role, while the vivid sound of EXPE seems to take the lead role and come to the fore. The sound of “WANOWA” seems to be sinking into the background and moving into a supporting role.
This makes me want to plunge further into the EXPE world and scatter colorful, delicate, and various variations of guitar sounds.
At the same time, however, it was necessary to keep the light of “WANOWA” while maintaining a parallel balance between the two.
It seemed as if there was an absolute law of exquisiteness and precision, reminiscent of the yin-yang taiji diagram or the phi phi phi of the golden ratio.
Very interestingly, when EXPE was overdubbing the recording, I had the illusion that “WANOWA” in the headphones was responding to EXPE's performance with hand chimes.
EXPE spun harmonies in response to the “WANOWA”, and the unknown song began to flow and appear as an organic development.
This work “FORESIGHT” was born supernaturally, always paying attention to this phenomenon of synchronicity.
Although this album was actually produced by EXPE, the star of the show is WANOWA.
If you listen to the album from the viewpoint of the hand chimes that are scattered and disappear in the space and lead the music, and also with an awareness of the three-dimensional layered structure of the various geometric patterns that emerge in front of you, you will find that it is a sound mandala that will bring about rediscoveries from various angles. You will find that it is an acoustic mandala that will give rise to rediscoveries from various angles.
Please experience it with a high-resolution sound system and headphones as much as possible.
